Union Guns is a country steam roller, leaving the crowd wondering what just ran them over. Offering an eclectic country mix, this band of gifted musicians are true-blue country boys with a pop edge. Comprised of mostly Grand Rapids natives, Union Guns brings some heavy hitters to the line up.
Timmy Lee, rhythm guitar and vocals, and Frank Pop, bass, played together in Grand Rapids-based band Branded for nearly three years, focusing on original music. After the disbanding of Branded, Frank realized his ideal band would center around Timmy Lee’s deep country voice.
Though they had not yet compiled the band line up, Frank was determined to open for Jamey Johnson at, Grand Rapids venue, the Intersection. Trusting Frank’s reputation and determination, the Intersection’s booking agent allowed Union Guns the opening slot. In less than three months, Union Guns formed and produced eight original songs for the half hour slot. Selling 42 of the 50 demo CD’s, the show proved to be an unbelievably successful beginning.
This could not have been accomplished without Curt Hines, the lead guitarist. Curt made a name for himself in bands such as Molly and Miles to Mars. Though all members of Union Guns are involved in the song writing process, Curt’ specialty lies in creating memorable hooks, witnessed in the song “Shame.”
Recently recruited drummer Kevin Conway and former Branded guitarist Kent Wellhoff both have deep roots in the country music scene and lend to the original sound that is Union Guns.
Union Guns’ songs are a well-rounded mix of blue collar attitude with the pop country found in artists such as Jason Aldean or Cross Canadian Ragweed. Their unique sound flows from the member’s influences, half of the band come from an alt-rock background while the other half is country born and raised.
Overall, Union Guns brings beer-drinkin’ attitude to the stage mixed with pop sensibility, but in the end it’s all just in your face country!
